Driving tips

The way you drive might have a greater impact on your car than anything the manufacturer does to it.

  • Avoid slamming the accelerator down as far as it goes, it’s highly fuel-inefficient and also leads to unnecessary engine and transmission strain. Accelerate gradually and your car will thank you for it.
  • Use a mix of gears and brakes to control your speed. Share the load with your gearbox and your brakes. But don’t downshift too soon! Make sure you shift gears at the right speed and your clutch plate will thank you for it. This will reduce the propensity of skidding on wet monsoon roads of our country.
  • Brake gradually and ensure you keep sufficient distance from the vehicles in front of you. This will reduce instances of you having to screech to a halt every few minutes, and your brakes will last much longer! This will also prevent skidding on the wet roads during India’s torrential monsoons.
  • When it doubt, slow down! Potholes can fill up with water and appear deceptively small. If you can’t avoid the puddle of unknown depth, just take it slow to prevent any unexpected jarring, scraping or worse, clogging.

  • Keep the cleaning fluid and anti-freeze topped up in the windshield washer system so you can ensure clear visibility even in sub-zero temperatures
  • Place covers over the windshield and rear window of your vehicle when parked to ensure your visibility remains unimpaired by frosting.
  • Clean your headlamps at regular intervals to keep them functional and safe.
  • Drive with your lights on even during the day, ensuring you are visible even through a flurry of snow.

What should you always have in the luggage compartment?

Monsoons can be challenging in a tropical country like India. But a little bit of prior preparation can go a long way in ensuring a safe and comfortable rainy-day drive.

  • Rubber mats - You never know when the next emergency hits. Keep those rubber mats handy to help you access the underside of the car without mudding yourself up
  • Towels - If you get into your car dripping wet, it's likely you will leave moisture on the seat. Keep some towels handy and towel yourself dry soon as you get in.
  • Hazard Reflectors: Torrential rain can cause poor visibility while driving, especially at night. Keep your hazard reflectors and hazard triangles handy so others can spot you from a safe distance away.
  • Jump lines: Getting stuck out in the rain can be a frightening prospect. Keep some jump lines handy to get your car going, or to help others in need.
