Monsoon Car Care - Do's & Don'ts - Blog by Bosch

Tips for your car care in the monsoon

Monsoons bring in heavy rainfall, sometimes even unimaginable floods and damage to roads. Especially for people living in metropolitan areas, the roads very quickly get blocked and traffic jams are inevitable. It is during times like these that it is important to make sure your car is well cared for and the right precautions are taken to avoid damage.

Here are some tips to ensure a safe and comfortable ride during the monsoons:

1. Check your wipers

This tip is incredibly important yet often neglected. The blades of the wipers tend to get worn out and less efficient over time. Hence, ensure your wipers are good to go, to prevent your vision from being compromised while driving.

2. Working headlights and tail lights

The lights on your car are good for your visibility as well as for others around you. Tail lights, fog lights, and turn signals are crucial all year round but they should be given extra attention during the monsoon season. Working lights will not only alert others on the road but they will also illuminate the area of vision around you.

3. Check the car’s braking system

Most accidents that occur during the monsoons are due to cars skidding. It is imperative to check the brakes of cars regularly for any components that may be worn out. According to the Financial Express, “it is essential to make sure that the tyre tread depth is more than 2mm, or else you will lose grip on the road and it will affect your braking as well. The best way to check your car’s tyre treads is to insert a coin and check if half of the coin is inside the car’s tyre’s treads.”

4. Protect the car’s undercarriage

During the rainy season, when you are driving through puddles, the water, muck, and grease can get inside the CV joint boots and wash the lubrication away. This will not only make the trip uncomfortable, but it will also cost you a lot of money in repairs down the road. Therefore, it is best to make sure that you correct all of your car's problems, including any loose or leaking parts.

5. Don’t compromise on washing your car

According to many, it may seem like washing your car during the rainy season is unnecessary. However, that is far from the truth. When it rains, acidic deposits from the downpour are often left behind and settle on your car, eating away at the exposed areas and the paint. Washing your car using solvent-free cleaning products or even just plain water can help neutralise the acidity to a great extent. You should also apply wax to your car for added protection since it will help the water droplets roll off from the body of the car.
